Why we love Kinky Boots the musical

With songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots takes you from the factory floor of Northampton to the fabulous catwalks of Milan. The musical follows the story of Charlie Price, played by David Hunter, as he inherits his fatherโ€™s old shoe factory, along with its debts. Confused, and torn between his heritage and a new life in London, Charlie finds an unlikely solution and friendship in drag queen Lola.

Lola, now played by Simon-Anthony Rhoden, is strong, fierce and fabulous. And we soon learn that this is a musical about much more than just shoes. For Lola, shoes represent the person she really is. And for Charlie, making a new type of shoes (kinky boots!) could save his friendsโ€™ futures.

Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots is hilarious, uplifting and heart-warming. Itโ€™s heartening to see Lola and the other drag queens met on stage with cheers of love and admiration. The plot is brimming with dazzling songs by Cyndi Lauper, leaving you dancing in your seat as they strut, glide and sing around the factory floor.

But, Lolaโ€™s experience is also sensitively represented – not just a comedy, Kinky Boots shows love and acceptance always wins. For a night of laughter with heart, we can’t recommend it enough.

Kinky Boots has won three Olivier Awards for Best New Musical, Best Costume Design and Best Actor. Simon-Anthony Rhoden now plays Lola, David Hunter plays Charlie and Verity Rushworth plays Lauren.

Put on your kinky boots and head to the Adelphi Theatre, London. Tickets are on sale now for shows until 24 March 2018. Find out more here.
