Understand your undertone

‘Our skin tones and undertones can vary depending on the weather, our health and our age, so understanding our undertones is important when it comes to finding the right base,’ says make-up artist Kay Montano. ‘For Caucasian skin it’s often the case that you either fall in the pink or the yellow category, but with darker skin tones you could be yellow, golden, red or even blue.’

To work out what category you fall in, check the veins on your wrist. If your veins appear greenish in natural light, you have yellow undertones with a hint of green, meaning you have a warm skin tone. Light brown veins come with a warm golden undertone, while veins that appear to be more bluish indicate a cool skin tone.

Also if you think you look better in gold your skin tone is definitely warm, while if you’d rather wear silver your tone is probably cool. 'If your veins are a mix of colours, and both gold and silver suit you, then you’ll fall under neutral,’ says Montano.
