During the year, I have enjoyed exploring many different kinds of resources to bolster my skill set, gain fresh insights and look after my wellbeing. I have dived into a diverse range of materials and curated the best of the bunch for my clients. In this blog, I share four resources which, when applied, can help develop how you relate to others. - Time to Think – Listening to Ignite the Human Mind’ written by Nancy Kline. The power of effective listening is an essential tool for improving how you interact with others. Whether your focus is on good management in the workplace, better personal relationships or both, you will find inspiration and sound process in Kline’s approach. Goleman’s outstanding book offers sharp insight into our “two minds”—the rational and the emotional—and how they together shape our destiny. Through vivid examples, Goleman delineates the five crucial skills of emotional intelligence and shows how they determine our success in relationships, work, and even our physical well-being. The book provides a blueprint to help anyone enhance their emotional literacy and reap the benefit of improved relationships and more satisfying way of living.
- The Fearless Organisation is a book by Amy Edmondson, a professor at Harvard Business School. In a fearless organisation, people act responsibly, courageously and know they can fail. They are not scared to speak up. They are willing to take the risk of openness and ‘tell it how it is’. Professor Edmondson gives dozens of examples of good and bad working cultures from more than twenty years of research. She then explains how to create a fearless organisation in your workplace. To do so, managers need to learn how to invite participation from staff and how to respond positively. They must know what to say and how to say it. The book concludes with a leadership self-assessment tool so you can track your performance as a manager.
- You might also enjoy the TED talk by Shawn Achor, which is about How to find happiness – and success – at work and in life. Not only is it an exciting presentation, but his style of talk is hugely engaging as well as persuasive and entertaining. You might find it helpful to view it twice – once for content and again to observe his presentational style.
