Lee Miller: A Woman's War is a new exhibition at the Imperial War Museum London of 150 images depicting women's experiences in World War II by acclaimed female photographer Lee Miller, one of only four female professional photographers accredited as a US official war correspondent at the time.
Recognised today as one of the most important female war photographers of the 20th century, through her work Miller offers an intriguing insight into the impact of conflict on the lives of women, gained from her travels before, during and in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. From fashion for the factory and why 'short hair is news again' to the D-Day landings, the horror of the concentration camps and post-war eastern Europe, Miller charted it all.
Miller's extraordinary life is as compelling a subject as her images, and mirrored the experiences of many women of the time in that she got the opportunity to do a job in a field that was typically male-dominated only to find many of the same opportunities denied to her once the war was over.
