Viceroy’s House – a must see film
Danielle Woodward reviews Viceroy’s House, directed by Gurinder Chadha
With a stellar cast, soaring soundtrack and beautiful imagery, Viceroy’s House tells the story of the final months of British rule in India, and the creation of Pakistan.
Lord and Lady Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville and Gillian Anderson) arrive in India with good intentions, to give the country back to its citizens, but have to deal with the bitter division there – the majority, Hindus and Sikhs, who want a united India, and the Muslim minority who seek a separate state.
The film looks at the experiences of those in charge, as well as ordinary folk, whose lives were irrevocably changed as people turned on each other – and the viewer is swept along on a tide of change, lies and deception.
Viceroy’s House is an emotional must-see.
