Best For: Those rainy days when staying in is the only thing you want to do
How better to get a leg-up on the career ladder, than by helping out your philandering superiors with their extra-curricular activities? While many would find it a torture merely turning a blind eye to seeing their boss conduct a sordid affair, company man Bud Baxter (Jack Lemmon) lets his managers take major liberties when they borrow his apartment for afternoon trysts. But his own romantic ambitions become even more complicated when kooky lift-operator Miss Kubelik (the delightful Shirley MacLaine) makes him realise he wants his life back, only for him to realise that his boss Mr Sheldrake hasnโt just conquered his bedroom, but also his bed partner.
Lemmon will never be matched in being both a lightly jaded wise-crack, and simultaneously a loveably warm-spirited romantic lead โ and the chemistry between his put-upon insurance broker and the elfin enchantress is a suitably sizzling follow-on to his previous outing with writer-director Billy Wilder โ Some Like It Hot.
